Italy is groaning under the heat. According to the national weather service, the thermometer cracked temperatures of over 40 degrees. The prospects for the coming week do not promise any cooling off.
After the first short heat wave at the end of June, Italy is again suffering from very high temperatures. According to the Italian Air Force’s official weather service, the 40-degree mark was broken in some areas of the Mediterranean country on Wednesday. Temperatures of just over 40 degrees were measured on the island of Sardinia and in the southern Italian region of Apulia. The current heat wave is called “Cerbero” by meteorologists – based on the multi-headed hellhound “Cerberus” in Greek mythology, which guards the entrance to the underworld.
Red alert in Italy
Other parts of Italy are also affected by the high temperatures. The Italian Ministry of Health announced the highest red alert for heat for eight larger cities on Wednesday. According to the Air Force weather service, 37 degrees were measured in the capital Rome and the cities of Florence and Bologna. These high daytime temperatures are extremely strenuous for the elderly, the sick and small children. The Ministry of Health therefore called for special precautions to protect against the heat. Temperatures around 28 degrees were measured in the north of the country.
Another heat wave will follow next week
According to the private weather portal ilmeteo.it, the high temperatures are due to an African high pressure area. High temperatures are forecast to continue next week. The “Caronte” heat wave will then follow “Cerbero”. This should bring even higher temperatures and spread to other regions of Italy. Up to almost 40 degrees are expected not only in the south.
