Passwords app automatically changes your weak passwords in the background

Part of Apple Intelligence for Software Updates 27

Apple continues to integrate the capabilities of Apple Intelligence into its standard apps, with one of the most useful innovations coming in the Passwords app. Previously, you already received notifications for weak, reused or leaked passwords, but with iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate, the app goes one step further: in many cases, these passwords are automatically replaced for you.

This happens without complicated steps or endless clicking in Safari. You can take advantage of this feature with just one tap from the Security View in the Passwords app. Apple Intelligence works with Safari to sign in to your account, open the password change page, generate a strong new password, and instantly store it securely in the Passwords app, all in the background.

Security advice in Password extended

Until now, the Passwords app mainly gave signals when a password was weak, reused or possibly involved in a data breach and you had to open the relevant website yourself to change the password. Starting with Software Updates 27, you can choose eligible accounts at once to have them updated to strong credentials, without having to dig through settings menus yourself.

Apple describes this as a feature where Apple Intelligence and Safari act on your behalf: the service automatically navigates through the login process and password change page and shows progress, for example, via a Live activity on your device. The result is that the familiar warnings in Passwords are no longer just advice, but can directly help you secure your accounts.

On iPhone, iPad or Mac, you will find an overview of accounts with weak login details or passwords that have been hacked in the Passwords app under the Security section. A button will appear at the top of supported websites to indicate that Passwords can solve the problems, after which the system will handle the accounts one by one via Apple Intelligence and Safari.

In practice, this means the device logs in in the background, navigates to the service’s settings page, suggests a unique strong password, and then stores it in your iCloud keychain so it’s available everywhere via autofill.

During the process you can simply do something else, while a Live Activity or similar notification indicates which accounts have already been updated and whether any further action is needed.

User privacy

Apple’s generative technology analyzes websites, recognizes fields and automatically fills in a new password, without you having to fill out forms yourself. Apple emphasizes privacy and combines tasks with local processing and Private Cloud Compute so that sensitive data remains on the device and communications are secure. Apple says that personal information for password changes is not used to create profiles and is not stored on their servers.

Not yet for all websites

The automatic password change feature is only effective on websites and services that support the required action-reaction, because Apple Intelligence and Safari need to be able to track your password recovery process in a predictable way. For accounts that don’t qualify, the usual route remains available, which takes you from Passwords to the website to manually set a new password.
