We wouldn’t want to go back to the time of the film for gold. Especially now that the new photo app Pico Digital Film brings the only advantage of these old-fashioned cameras to the iPhone.
Pico Digital Film consciously goes back in time
For many iPhone users it will be a habit: you take a photo and then choose a matching filter to make your snapshot that little bit more beautiful. Designer Louie Mantia shows with Pico Digital Film how this worked for the smartphone in the past.
Then you could give photos a filter by changing the film roll. This makes colors look different, which for example creates a warm or cool effect. A big difference from how it works now, because in this way you already choose the filter before you take the photo.
Mantia is now bringing this technique to the iPhone with this new photography app. Instead of presenting you with countless options, you set the brightness by swiping the screen and the focus is automatically set. All you have to do is choose the right digital film roll to see the image change instantly.
Free, but limited
This makes Pico Digital Film an accessible app, with filters that also look very good. Rather than over-adjusting your photo, it just fine-tunes the colors in subtle ways. This way your photos will look slightly different, but it is still up to you to think about lighting and shadows.
Pico Digital Film is free to download, but various filters are available through in-app purchases. You can unlock them all for 3.99 euros. You can try out all the available rolls of film so that you can first determine for yourself whether the app is worth your money.
