Netflix, Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus will have a new competitor at the end of 2019. Plex now also has its own video service, which is completely free to use and includes some well-known names.
Plex unveils its own streaming service
Video app Plex takes a slightly different approach than the competition. Instead of charging a monthly fee for unlimited access to the service’s offerings, you can watch everything Plex has to offer for free, but with ads in between. All you need is a Plex account, which you can create for free.
Because the service is free to use, you can’t skip the ads. Also, there is no paid subscription available to disable these ads.
Plex has made deals for this with big names from the film industry. From day one, you can watch films and series from Warner Bros, Lionsgate, MGM and Legendary. Some examples are Apocalypse Now, Raging Bull, Terminator, Lord of War and Ghost in the Shell.
The video service has been offered in a number of countries for a while as a test, but is now rolling out to the rest of the world. Plex has already committed to expanding its offerings in the future, just as Netflix and Disney do with their services.
Plex streaming service widely available
Like the Plex app that lets you set up your own video server, the service works on just about all Apple devices. From the Apple TV to the iPhone and Mac to Android devices and game consoles. The video quality has a maximum of 1080p and the service saves where you left off. That way you can watch something on your iPhone on the go and then continue watching at home on your PlayStation.
The service offerings will appear in the app alongside your own Plex library content. Plex wants to offer one place where you can go for all your streaming video needs. If you prefer not to do this, you can turn it off again in the settings. Based on your current media collection, the app will also do its best to serve you movies and series that match this.
