Prepare iPhone or iPad for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18

iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 are coming soon and that’s good news! Because both software updates contain a lot of new options and features, but also some useful and welcome improvements for iPhone and iPad.

Both updates are expected in the fall. As soon as the new version of iOS and iPadOS are available, you can download and install them on your iDevice. In most cases, this goes well and without further problems, but you can prepare your iPhone or iPad so that you can get started right away and limit any problems.

Step 1: Does my iPhone or iPad support iOS 18 and iPadOS 18?

iOS 18 can be installed on iPhone Xr, Xs or later, and iPhone SE 2nd generation or later. iPadOS 18 is supported on iPad 7th generation or later, iPad Air 3rd generation or later, iPad mini 5th generation or later, 19.2-inch iPad Pro 3rd generation or later, and all 11-inch iPad Pro models.

Step 2: Make sure there is enough free space

Just like iOS/iPadOS 17, the eighteenth version will take up less space on your iDevice and during installation. However, you will need about 2 GB of free space on your iPhone or iPad when you want to install iOS 18 or iPadOS 18. You can check this via Settings â–¸ General â–¸ iDevice Storage. You can free up storage space using these tips, and you can also temporarily delete apps for extra space.

Step 3: Do you have the correct version of iOS?

To install iOS 18 or iPadOS 18, you must have iOS 17. This means that if you are still using iOS 16 or lower on your iPhone or iPad, you must update it. This can be done via Finder on a Mac or directly via Settings â–¸ General â–¸ Software Update. Please note that your iDevice will also be able to install iOS/iPadOS 18 later, you can find this in step 1.

Step 4: Update all your apps

Especially in the days before the launch, it is advisable to update all apps on your iDevice to the latest version. Often these are already iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 ‘compatible’ and you can use them immediately after the system update. In some cases, certain apps do not work under the latest iOS version, which is why many developers release an update for their application just before the iOS release. This is good, because this means that they cannot cause problems when the new software is on your iDevice.

Step 5: Make sure you have an iCloud account

It is increasingly important to have an iCloud account. Also for the seventeenth version of iOS it is useful that you are connected to iCloud, for example for the extra privacy and security options of PassKeys. An iCloud account is not mandatory, but it is recommended. By the way, you do not necessarily have to have an @icloud.com address, you can also create an iCloud account with your current e-mail address.

Additionally, we recommend that each person have their own iCloud, so couples should each have their own account, rather than sharing one.

An iCloud account is linked to your Apple Account, if you have one go to Settings â–¸ your name â–¸ iCloud and log in with your Apple Account. If you don’t have one yet, you can create one for free. Follow these steps. If you want to know more about iCloud and how it works exactly, check out this iCloud manual here.

Step 6: Make a backup

New software, there is always a chance that your iPhone or iPad will have to be completely restored because something goes wrong during the update. That is unfortunate, but it can happen. Fortunately, you will not lose all your data if you can restore a backup. You can of course make this via iTunes or Finder, but it is important that you make an encrypted backup. In addition, you can also make an online backup via iCloud, this can be done from your iDevice via Settings â–¸ your name â–¸ iCloud â–¸ iCloud backup â–¸ Make backup now.

Step 7: Additional safety precautions

New software is a great opportunity to optimally secure your Apple ID and iCloud. Since iOS 10, Apple has more or less made it mandatory to use an additional verification. This security is also mandatory if you want to use certain functions. Those who have not done so yet can activate two-factor authentication today, this authentication is more secure than the traditional two-step verification. What the difference is, how the service works and how to activate it, you can read here.
