Prepare your Mac (Book) for the macOS Mojave beta in 3 steps

The public beta of macOS Mojave is not long in coming, and many users are looking forward to trying all the features. With these tips you ensure that you can quickly and safely install the test version.

Prepare for the macOS Mojave beta

Earlier we discussed some tips on iPhoned to prepare for iOS 12, but of course we will soon also be able to get started with the beta of macOS Mojave. To download the test version as soon as possible, it is useful to go through the steps below. This way you can immediately start installing.

1. Does your Mac support the Mojave beta?

With every update (and beta), the question is whether your Mac (Book) supports the latest version. With macOS Mojave, this is especially important, because Apple is dropping a lot of older devices that were updated to macOS High Sierra last year. If you have a Mac released before 2012, you will unfortunately be left out and you no longer have to count on new versions. Below we list the devices that are updated to macOS Mojave:

  • MacBook (Early 2015 and newer)
  • MacBook Air (Mid 2012 and newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 and newer)
  • Mac mini (Late 2012 and newer)
  • iMac (Late 2012 and newer)
  • iMac Pro (2017)
  • Mac Pro (late 2013, mid 2012 and 2010 with suitable Metal GPU)

2. Create a beta account in advance

Please note that if you want to install the trial version of Mojave, you must have a special beta account. You can already create this via the Apple website, which will save you time and effort. To do this, follow the steps below.

  1. Go to the beta website of Apple;
  2. Log in with your Apple ID and password;
  3. Click on ‘macOS’;
  4. Choose the device you want to install the beta on.

3. Provide enough storage space and a backup

The word ‘test version’ says it all: it is an early version that is not completely finished. The beta therefore contains bugs, which can cause things to go wrong with your Mac. Therefore, make sure to make a backup before installing macOS Mojave; this way you avoid losing important data. Backing up a Mac (Book) is easiest with Time Machine. You can read how that works in the tip below.

Finally, it is important to have enough storage space on your MacBook, so that there is enough memory for the installation process. Conveniently, macOS High Sierra – the current version of the operating system – contains a function to quickly free up space. Check out our article about Optimized Storage on your Mac for this.
