With the Galaxy S22 and S22+, Samsung mainly focuses on the standout cameras, but the Armor Aluminum housing, the new processor, Wi-Fi 6E and 4 years of Android updates also stand out in this preview.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 series is the logical successor to the Galaxy S21 and consists of the S22, the S22+ and the Galaxy S22 Ultra described in detail here. Samsung puts the emphasis on the cameras with, among other things, the new Nightography functions. In this article we tell you the ins and outs of the Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy S22+ that I saw during the preview in the Samsung headquarters, the review will follow shortly.
Design and housing Galaxy S22 and S22+
The Galaxy S22 and S22+ look nice and sleek, partly because of the edges (Samsung calls this the Contour Cut design), the aluminum housing and the glass front and back. They are the first models in the S-series to be made from Armor Aluminum, Samsung’s strongest aluminum housing. They are also the first smartphones to feature the new Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the front and back, so the chance of damage is a lot smaller if you accidentally drop the device. The S22 measures 70.6 x 146.0 x 7.6 mm and weighs 168 grams, while the S22+ measures 75.8 x 157.4 x 7.6 mm and weighs 196 grams.
At the front, the selfie camera of both the Galaxy S22 and the S22+ does not really stand out, at the back the cameras do stand out, but not as much as with the S22 Ultra. Incidentally, the camera housing fits well with the color of the slim and symmetrical metal frame. Both the Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+ are available in Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green and Pink Gold. More colors are available in the e-store: Gray, Cream, Violet and Light Blue.
Screen Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+
The Galaxy S22 has a 6.1-inch screen and the Galaxy S22 a 6.6-inch screen. Due to the round corners, you have 0.2 inches less, while of course the selfie camera also takes up a bit of space. Both are equipped with an FHD+ screen: the Dynamic AMOLED 2x adaptive 120Hz screen. Handy is the intelligent Vision booster technology that automatically adjusts your screen to the lighting around you for optimal color contrast. The screen brightness is also remarkably good: the S22 has a peak brightness of 1,300 nits and that of the S22+ even 1,750 nits.
Processor, memory and battery
The Galaxy S22 and S22+ are equipped with the first 4nm processor on a Galaxy smartphone ever, the Exynos 2200. Together with 8 GB of RAM and Samsung’s AI and ML, this guarantees a nice and fast device, as I noticed during the preview session. . In addition, the S22(+) is so smart that it automatically detects which app you’re using and then sends the most energy to it. In terms of storage memory, you can choose from 128 GB or 256 GB.
The Galaxy S22 has a battery of 3700 mAh, the S22+ of 4500 mAh. Optionally, you can buy a 25W fast charger for the S22 and a 45W fast charger for the Galaxy S22+. Read at the paragraph Striking below about the charger and kanbel.
Cameras Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+
Samsung is investing heavily in the cameras, one of the most important buying arguments among consumers when they buy a smartphone. With the new Nightography features of the Galaxy S22 series, such as the 23% larger sensor than the S21 and S21+ and the Adaptive Pixel technology, the camera is designed to let in more light, bring out details and fix colors to make your content stand out, even in the dark. Both models have a powerful 50MP main camera, 10MP telephoto lens and 12MP ultra-wide angle lens. When you take videos of your friends, the handy Auto Framing function automatically adjusts the focus of your camera, so you can get up to 10 people in the frame. Both the Galaxy S22 and S22+ are equipped with VDIS technology that minimizes vibrations, so you can shoot sharp and steady images even on the go.
Furthermore, the Galaxy S22 and S22+ are equipped with Samsung’s latest AI technology. For example, the AI Stereo Depth Map makes it very easy to take great portrait photos and thanks to an advanced AI algorithm, your subjects look better. The same goes if you want to photograph your dog or cat: the Galaxy S22/S22+’s new portrait mode helps prevent your pet’s fur from disappearing into the background.
Security
The Galaxy S22 series is secured with Samsung’s Knox Vault. This security platform has a secure processor and memory that isolates sensitive data, such as your passwords, biometrics or Blockchain keys, from the main operating system of the phone. With One UI’s privacy dashboard and Indicator, it’s easy to see which apps want access to your data and camera, and you decide per app whether you allow or deny that. The Galaxy S22 series also introduces several new security features, such as ARM micro architecture, which helps prevent cyber attacks on your operating system and memory.
Striking: no charger, but Wi-Fi 6E and more updates
Samsung has chosen not to include a charger and charging cable, mainly for environmental reasons and because they have been supplying this since 2017, according to Samsung. Of course, cost-technical reasons also play a role here: they simply cost money and the packaging can also be smaller, which makes a significant difference in logistics costs.
Positive is the fact that the devices are equipped with Wi-Fi 6E, the latest Wi-Fi standard. Well, you’ll need to have a modem router to take full advantage of this, but you’ll probably have one in the future,
The Galaxy S22 series is equipped with Android 12, which is not striking. That Samsung with the S22 series, the Tab S8 and a number of devices about which more soon, no less than 4 years of Android updates. And 5 years of security updates. Which other Android smartphone manufacturer is following? I don’t see a number of Chinese manufacturers doing that anytime soon…
