Recording phone calls was difficult for Android smartphones. Some apps that made call recording possible in a detour will be cut off from May 11. As a result, many Android smartphones will soon no longer be able to record conversations at all.
Recording telephone conversations is a privacy-sensitive function. Nevertheless, it may be necessary for some, for example for journalists who want to work out telephone interviews. Telephone salespeople also need this, although they are bound by rules stating that the call is being recorded.
Because it is a sensitive function, Google has ensured in Android that recording conversations is not just possible. That is very safe, so apps cannot record your phone conversations unnoticed. Since Android version 10, Google has built in this protection, after which many call recorder apps no longer work.
However, there were some apps that still allowed call recordings by using an accessibility option. In order to record a conversation, the app had to request explicit permission, in a different way than regular permissions.
Although no reason is stated why, Google announced that it will ban apps that use this accessibility feature to record phone calls from May 11.
How do I record Android phone calls?
This makes it very difficult for Android users to record phone calls. In Samsung smartphones, such a function is built into the phone app. The phone app on Google Pixel smartphones can do this too, but this feature is only available in some countries. The Netherlands is not one of them. This issue is not an issue for iPhone users.
For smartphones with Android 10 or higher, which are not from Samsung, it will no longer be possible to record telephone conversations from 11 May. Then via an app. A voice recorder can still record the conversation, provided you conduct the conversation via the telephone speaker.
