Rename multiple files quickly

Quickly rename filenames in Windows? Use the Tab key on the keyboard and jump from one file to another in no time.

You can easily rename files that are under each other in the Explorer with the Tab key on the keyboard. This is how it works:

  • Open the Explorer.
  • Right click on the top file you want to name.
  • In Windows 10, click Renaming. In Windows 11, at the top of the menu, click the icon Renaming.
  • Type a new name.
  • Press the Tab key on the keyboard.
  • The next file in the list is selected and the ‘Rename’ function is still active. Type the new name of this file.
  • Press Tab each time to rename the next file. Skip intermediate files that are already well-named by pressing the Tab key right away without typing anything.
  • Finished? Press the Enter key.
