Replacing the AirTag battery: this is how you do it

The AirTag is a handy device to always find your belongings. But what do you do when it is empty? In this tip we explain how to replace the battery of the AirTag.

Replacing the AirTag battery: that’s how it works

The AirTag works with a simple button cell battery. This is handy, because that way you never have to charge the tracker and you can leave the AirTag on your key ring or bag. The disadvantage is that you have to replace the battery every now and then. Fortunately, that works very easily, although it is a tricky job.

The Apple tracker has a standard flat button cell battery, of the type CR2032. You can buy this for a few euros at almost all stores that sell batteries. This is how you replace the AirTag battery:

  1. Press the metal part of the AirTag and turn it a quarter turn;

  2. The top will now pop off. Take out the old battery and put in a new one;

  3. Push the metal part back in and turn it back a quarter turn.

As soon as the AirTag makes contact with the battery again, you will hear a soft, high-pitched tone coming from the tracker. After replacing the battery, the AirTag is immediately reconnected to your iPhone.
