Sales of tablets and Chromebooks fell in the fourth quarter of 2021, compared to a strong year 2020. Analysts expect sales to remain stronger compared to the period before the corona pandemic.
Tablets and Chromebooks
Since 2020 we have all started working from home and the sale of tablets and Chromebooks has skyrocketed as a result. Both products still sold well in the first months of 2021, but now it seems that a decrease has started again if we look at the figures for the fourth quarter that IDC shares.
In the fourth quarter of 2021, tablet sales declined by 11.9 percent compared to the same period in 2020. Chromebooks saw a larger drop in sales of 63.6 percent. Viewed over the whole year, there is still a slight increase compared to 2020.
Market share manufacturers
You will discover the market share and sales figures recorded by the largest manufacturers of tablets and Chromebooks in the tables below. In both cases, this concerns sales for the entire year 2021. In the field of tablets, we see that Apple and Samsung are gaining an increasing market share compared to the smaller players.

What will the future bring?
Analysts also expect sales of tablets and Chromebooks to end at a higher plateau compared to the pre-corona pandemic period, as a continued trend toward video conferencing and working from home has emerged. In the fall of 2021, Nokia was still enthusiastic about the sale of tablets at Androidworld and Google thinks the future of computers is shifting to more powerful and capable tablets.
For Chromebooks, IDC expects sales to increase due to success in emerging markets. Sales are currently still suffering from the global chip shortage, as manufacturers usually prioritize more expensive Windows devices in production. This puts the stock of Chromebooks at risk.
