Research shows that the Dutch are less and less interested in the latest smartphones. It is striking that Samsung cannot match the search volumes of the iPhone.
Less interest in the latest smartphones
Smartphone makers will have a harder time capturing consumer attention. That appears from research from Smartphonehoesjes.nl. For this research, the search volumes on Google in the months surrounding the launch of new phones were analyzed. The iPhone 13, 12, 11, X and the Samsung Galaxy S21, Galaxy S20, Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S9 were looked at.
The analysis shows that the number of searches for the latest model has decreased significantly over the time of its release. The fact that the latest model receives less attention than before can be due to many things. Due to the pandemic, there is economic uncertainty and there is a huge chip shortage, which means that a latest smartphone is no longer at the top of the wish list.
People are waiting longer to buy a new phone
One in three people buy a new phone once every two years, according to figures from Smartphonehoesjes.nl. Nearly sixty percent do this less than once every two years: “People indicate that they completely ‘use up’ their old phone before buying a new one. In addition, the new models are becoming more and more expensive. For more than forty percent of people, this is a reason to wait longer before buying a new phone.”
We also saw the same result in our AW Poll about the lifespan of smartphones at the beginning of 2021. We compare the results of 2021 and 2019. All results showed that people took longer with their telephones. In particular, the group of readers who bought their phone between two and three years ago had grown considerably.
iPhone is less popular
The iPhone 11 was the most popular iPhone in recent years. In September 2019, the month of its launch, the iPhone 11 had 2.7 million searches. Three iPhone models are significantly less favored by users: the iPhone 13 mini, the iPhone xs Max and the iPhone 11 Pro Max. This matches the keyword ‘latest iPhone’. There is also a downward trend here. There is a peak during the launches, but it decreases every year.
It is striking that the iPhone 13, released in 2021, cannot yet match the popularity in searches of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12. The iPhone 13 was searched more than 1.9 million times, while the iPhone 12 was still good for 2.6 million searches. According to Smartphonehoesjes.nl, this may be due to the good sales of the iPhone 12 because it had many new features. The iPhone 13 has fewer new features and the people who bought an iPhone 12 last year aren’t buying a new phone yet. In addition, the iPhone 13 is less readily available due to the chip shortage.
Samsung vs iPhone
Samsung can not match the search volumes of the iPhone, according to the research. The Samsung Galaxy S10 is the most popular Samsung phone in terms of number of searches. The Galaxy S10 also had a major upgrade in features over its predecessor, the S9. Especially the screen, the cameras and the performance received a major update. This has made many people curious about that version.
The latest Samsung devices are of less and less importance to consumers. The search terms for the latest smartphones of the South Korean brand decrease considerably in the first three months after the release. At the beginning of 2019, when the Galaxy S10 was released, there were still more than one million searches. With the Galaxy S20, a year later, this was 7% less. With the Galaxy S21, this was even 42% less at the beginning of 2021.
