You might think that the social media landscape is saturated by now, but the creators of BeReal think otherwise.

BeReal takes a different approach than established platforms, such as Instagram. The new app gives you two minutes at an unspecified time to take a photo. Where with Instagram you can choose from a large amount of filters (which are often used in practice), BeReal is about natural photos. If you really don’t feel like taking the photo within two minutes, you will be ‘punished’ for this and you will not be able to see the photos of the other users. It is still possible to add a photo afterwards, but this will be reported.
Actually, two photos are taken each time: the photo itself is provided with a selfie photo. So you not only see the photo you take, but also yourself. With this, the makers try to make each user personal. To keep things interesting, BeReal has certain photo assignments, which are presented randomly. You can comment on photos of other users, as you are used to from other social networks. You use RealMoji for this. These are emoticons that represent the user.
