Review: NeuralCam also lets older iPhones shoot beautiful night photos

Do you have an older iPhone without Night Mode, but would you like to take beautiful photos in the evening? Then NeuralCam NightMode is a solution. With this app you can conjure up beautiful pictures from your phone in the dark.

With NeuralCam, every iPhone gets a night mode

With the iPhone 11, Apple introduced a new feature that fans have been looking forward to for a long time: Night Mode. This allows you to take much better exposed photos in the dark than before. The mode is activated automatically when the lighting conditions are poor. But what if you still have an older iPhone?

When using an iPhone 6 or newer, NeuralCam can provide your device with an alternate night mode. You must be running at least iOS 12. The app uses a combination of AI and computational photography to deliver a usable photo in low light.

The app works with both the main camera on the back and the selfie camera. That’s an advantage over Apple’s own Night Mode, because it only works with the main camera. There is a small but: on the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus you cannot use NeuralCam in combination with the selfie camera.

How NeuralCam NightMode works

NeuralCam NightMode works like this: when you press the shutter button, you have to hold your phone still for a few seconds. In that time, the app takes several photos in succession at lightning speed. NeuralCam then uses advanced algorithms to merge the best parts of all those images into one better exposed photo.

The results you get with NeuralCam are fine, but not as good as using Apple’s Night Mode on an iPhone 11. Still, it’s an attractive app if you still have an older iPhone. The photos that roll out are much better than the ones you take with Apple’s own camera app.
