From 1 July 2022, smoke detectors will be mandatory in every home in the Netherlands. Read here why, what you should pay attention to when purchasing and which smoke and carbon monoxide detectors we have tested.

In new-build homes, it has been mandatory since 2003 to have smoke detectors in every storey and/or in confined spaces through which an escape route runs. From 1 July 2022, this will apply to all homes, including existing buildings. More lives should be saved with this measure, because in the event of a fire, most victims fall due to smoke inhalation.
FIRE AND SMOKE HAZARD
The smoke released during the fire contains toxic substances, which can quickly make you unconscious. You can then suffocate because of the (thick) smoke and the lack of sufficient oxygen. Because you cannot smell anything during your sleep, there is a greater chance that you will be surprised by fire (and therefore smoke). Smoke detectors should therefore prevent you from being surprised. Fortunately, your hearing does work while you sleep. Smoke detectors can also detect smoke more quickly during the day, so if a fire breaks out, you will be warned in time.
POINTS TO CHECK
What should you pay attention to when purchasing a smoke detector? We do not recommend purchasing the cheapest (Chinese) smoke detectors, but smoke detectors that have a CE marking based on the product standard EN14604. Your smoke detector does not have to work on electricity, one with batteries will also suffice. However, every smoke detector must be replaced every ten years. It is therefore nice if a smoke detector (and the battery) has a lifespan of ten years, and you do not have to replace the battery every year.
SMART
We also recommend that you take a smoke detector that can be connected to several smoke detectors. For example, if you have a house with three floors and you are on the ground floor, you may not hear the alarm when it goes off on the top floor. So make sure that a smoke detector has a loud siren, for example 85 dB. It is also useful if a smoke detector gives a small light signal every so often, so that you know that it is still working properly. There are also smart smoke detectors with an app, where you can see the status and which can warn you via a notification or signal on your smartphone if something is wrong.
CARBON MONOXIDE GAUGE
Much that applies to a smoke detector also applies to a carbon monoxide meter. Please note that carbon monoxide is lighter than air, so we recommend hanging this meter at breathing height. Furthermore, the CE certification (EN 50291) is important.
