RTRO: Cool video camera app turns your iPhone into a retro camera

With the vintage-style video camera app RTRO, you can shoot a video of up to 60 seconds. This allows you to film short pieces with a nice retro filter.

RTRO is ideal for social media

The RTRO app lets you record short videos and then paste them one after the other. This allows you to make videos of up to one minute. Ideal for social media such as Instagram Stories or TikTok. Unfortunately, the best features are behind a paywall.

Editing videos has never been easier: you press the record button, record something, and tap the same button to stop. Then you go to your next shot and repeat everything again. The individual clips are automatically put one after the other, to make a video of a maximum of one minute. After exporting your video, you can post it directly to Instagram or save it to your Camera Roll. Unfortunately it is not possible to take pictures with this app.

App works very intuitively

The app is made by professional filmmakers and is very intuitive. You start by choosing a filter. Also very handy: if you swipe up on a filter, you immediately see an example of what this filter looks like. If you have chosen a filter, you can set how strong you want the filter to be by swiping up or down on the screen. Then you record a video.

As with many other camera apps, you can zoom by holding down the record button and swiping up or down. Switching between the front camera and the lens on the back also works as you are used to: by tapping twice you can also switch cameras while filming.

You can ensure that your subject always remains sharp by switching on ‘subject tracking’. You do this by long-pressing a point on your screen. This fixes a certain point so that the focus does not suddenly change during filming. You can also easily turn off the focus by tapping another point on the screen.

Most features are behind a paywall

The retro effect gives your video a nice summer filter right away. You can use the first three filters for free. You can see the rest of the filters, but unfortunately cannot be used without paying. You can only use all the features if you take out a subscription with RTRO.

That is also what is unfortunate about this app. A lot of features remain closed to non-paying users. Do you like one particular filter? Then you can also buy it separately for 2.29 euros. That’s a pretty high price for one filter, especially when you consider that a monthly subscription costs 1.99 euros.

With a subscription you get direct access to all filters and a new effect every month. You can also set the number of frames per second to make your video look even more vintage. In addition, you can set a watermark yourself, instead of the default watermark of the free version. For 16.49 euros you can use the app for a year. That is quite pricey for an app, but if you post a lot on social media, it can offer a nice variety and individuality for your timeline.
