Rumor: iPhone 15 Pro will get titanium housing – you need to know this

According to the latest rumors, the new iPhone 15 Pro models will get a titanium housing for the first time. This supposedly allows for a lighter design and extra durability.

iPhone 15 Pro titanium

If Apple does indeed switch materials with the iPhone 15 Pro, that would mean the end of the stainless steel casing we’ve known since the iPhone X from 2017. So far, various sources have already reported that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max (previously the iPhone 15 Ultra) will get a titanium housing.

Last November reported Twitter user ShrimpApplePro already that the iPhone 15 Pro would get a titanium housing with rounded corners. ShrimpApplePro often gets it right, but not always. His suspicion has since been confirmed by JP Morgan Chase analyst Jeff Pu.

Titanium housing from Apple

Apple has been working on an iPhone with a titanium casing for years. Several of the company’s patent applications confirm this. But to get a clear idea of what a titanium iPhone 15 Pro could look like, we need to look at the Apple Watch.

Since the introduction of the Series 5 in 2019, the Apple Watch has been available in a titanium version – then in the colors natural and space black. This was the first time Apple had used titanium since the 2001 PowerBook G4. The Apple Watch Series 6 was available in the same colors as the Apple Watch Series 7 in 2021. The current-generation Apple Watch has a titanium case exclusive to the Apple Watch Ultra.

iPhone 15 Pro titanium: lighter than steel

Of course, it comes as no surprise that titanium is lighter than stainless steel. Since the introduction of the iPhone X, Apple has been using stainless steel bezels. Recent iPhones have aluminum in the non-Pro models and stainless steel in the Pro and Pro Max models. This means that the iPhone 14 is lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro.

If Apple uses titanium for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, they will therefore be slightly heavier than the aluminum iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. They would be a lot lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, which have stainless steel bands around the side.

How much lighter is of course not yet clear. The 45mm Apple Watch Series 7 in titanium is about 12 percent lighter than the stainless steel version. That won’t quite apply to the new iPhones, but it gives you a bit of an idea.
