Apple continues to dominate the smartphone market in the premium price segment. It has a market share of more than 60 percent in the high price segment in the first two quarters. Samsung’s share has fallen in that price category since last year.
Premium segment market share
Apple dominates the top price range of the smartphone market worldwide, according to recent figures from Counterpoint Research† iPhones will account for 62 percent of total premium phone sales in the first quarter of 2022. A year earlier it was 57 percent in the same period. Samsung also sees its market share decline from 18 percent (in Q1 2021) to 16 percent (in Q1 2022).
The South Korean brand can therefore not immediately reap the benefits of the launch of the Galaxy S22 series in February. According to the researchers, this is partly because Samsung also launched the phone a month later this year than last year. The Galaxy S22 Ultra was the best-selling Android phone in the first quarter of this year, but Samsung has been losing ground to Apple since last year.
Huawei phone sales fell further in the first quarter of this year, from 9 percent market share in 2021 to 3 percent now. Apple has clearly benefited the most from that, more than the Android manufacturers. OPPO, the number three in the premium segment, has gained 1 percent in market share. Xiaomi and Vivo, numbers four and five respectively, did not improve.
Foldables market is growing
One bright spot for Samsung is foldable phone sales, which are up 184 percent in the second quarter of 2022, compared to a year earlier. In total, foldables account for 3 percent of premium phones sold, but there is potential for growth as more foldable smartphones hit the market and prices fall.
Sven Adams, PR manager of Samsung Belgium, sounded hopeful about the sale of premium phones at the beginning of this year at the S22 launch. In an interview with Androidworld, he also referred to the Galaxy Z phones:
“(…) If we look at last year, for example, the foldables that had a lot to do and that we strongly believe in, we see that sales have increased times five. I think it just proves that we are on the We are on the right track and with this launch we are convinced that we will continue to appeal to a large group and an ever-growing group of people with these innovations.”
