TikTok may be banned in the United States in 2025, but an alternative to the app has already emerged. You need to know this.
TikTok ban
After years of discussions, it appears that TikTok will be banned in the United States in 2025. There have long been concerns about the application, because TikTok is part of the Chinese company ByteDance. There is a fear that user data will be misused by the Chinese government. That is why the US government has set a deadline of early 2025 for ByteDance to sell (part of) the application to an American company.
This acquisition must ensure that the privacy of users on TikTok is guaranteed. The Chinese government should also have less power in the United States. ByteDance has until January 19 to reach an agreement with an American company. Is the company not adhering to this deadline? TikTok will then be banned in the United States from 2025.
Important law passed
Parent company ByteDance had appealed against the measures taken by the US government. The Court of Appeal has now ruled that the ban on TikTok does not conflict with freedom of expression. That is important, because the law adopted by President Biden will be enforced. This means that ByteDance is still obliged to sell the American branch of the company before January 19.
The Chinese company has now announced that it will go to the US Supreme Court. ByteDance is thus trying to prevent the parts of TikTok from having to be sold. There is little chance that the law will be amended, which means ByteDance has little time to reach an agreement. Yet the company has no other choice, otherwise TikTok will be banned in the United States from January 20, 2025.
