Scan and save documents via the Files app for iPhone or iPad

There are many apps in the App Store these days that allow you to scan documents. You can scan files directly using the Notes app on an iPhone or iPad, but it’s more convenient to do this directly through the Files app.

Thanks to the Files app, you can save documents directly to a convenient place, such as iCloud Drive or other online storage services such as Dropbox or Google Drive. It is also possible to save the documents locally on your iPhone. This gives you access to your scanned files anytime, anywhere.

Scan documents via Files

  • Open the Files app
  • Navigate to the tab ‘Browse
  • Tap the three dots at the top
  • Choose ‘Scan documents’

Position blue frame

As soon as you activate scan mode, the camera will open. Point the camera at the document you want to scan. When the camera recognizes the document, a blue frame will appear covering the entire document. Hold your iPhone or iPad as still as possible, and the scan will be made automatically. If this doesn’t happen, tap the camera button to take the scan manually.

Adjust scan

You can adjust the scan via the corners so that only the most important parts of the document are saved. Then tap ‘Keep Scan’ to save it. You then return to the camera screen to make another scan if necessary. Don’t you want this? Then tap the ‘Save button’.

Save scan

You can save the scan with the blue check mark. In older versions of iOS and iPadOS, tap the save button directly. You then have the option to save the scan to a location of your choice, such as the Documents folder in iCloud Drive or a folder in Dropbox. After saving you can view the scan via the chosen location.
