Earlier we showed how to make a backup of your iPad or iPhone. You can also secure them, so that it becomes much more difficult for malicious parties to loot your data.
Secure your iTunes backup
The backup of your data from your iPhone or iPad in iTunes is saved as an ‘sms.db’ file. This way everyone can find your backup on your computer. To prevent this, protect the backup with a password. This encrypts your passwords, Wi-Fi settings, visited websites and data from Health.
There are a number of steps required to secure and encrypt your backup. They are:
- Connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac or PC and start iTunes;
- Choose the device you want to back up;
- Select ‘Encrypt iPhone Backup’ under Backups;
- Create and confirm a password.
Your data will now be backed up again. Older backups will be overwritten, so keep that in mind. All new backups you make are automatically encrypted with the password you just created. You can check this in iTunes by going to ‘Preferences> Devices’. Here is now a padlock behind the backup. To restore the data from your backup to your iDevice, you need the password again. Therefore, keep it safe, for example with a password manager.
