Secure your Apple ID with two-step verification in 4 steps

Two-step verification is a handy way to keep your Apple ID extra secure. In this article you can read exactly how to activate this online protection.

Set up Apple ID two-step verification: that’s how it works

With two-step verification, you ensure that you are the only one who can access your Apple ID. Even if someone knows your password, your account cannot be compromised. This is because you need an extra (second) step to log in in addition to your password. Not a superfluous luxury to use, but you have to activate it yourself.

A number of conditions are attached to the activation of this protection. You need at least iOS 9 or OS X El Capitan and logically must have an Apple ID. If you meet this requirement, you can add the extra security measure in no time.

To activate Apple ID two-step verification:

  1. Go to My Apple ID via this link;
  2. Click on ‘Manage your Apple ID’ and log in;
  3. Go to the heading ‘Security’ and click on ‘Edit’;
  4. Then choose ‘Enable two-factor authentication’.

It is also possible to enable two-step verification via the settings of your iOS device. It is important to know that you can also manually request an Apple ID verification code in this screen.

  1. Go to Settings on your iPhone or iPad;
  2. Tap your name at the top and then choose ‘Password and security’;
  3. Tap Turn On Two-Factor Authentication and confirm.

This is how you log in with two-step verification

From now on, the registered device acts as a way to receive the verification code. Every time you log in to a new Apple device, this numerical code appears on the device and you cannot continue until it has been entered. When setting up two-step verification, you will also receive a fourteen-digit recovery code. You must keep this carefully, because you need it if you have lost your iPhone, for example, and you can no longer receive the four-digit code.

Two-step verification affects everything your Apple ID qualifies with, and that’s quite a bit. For example, activating in one fell swoop increases the security of your online Apple ID page, iCloud files, iMessage, FaceTime, the App Store and iTunes. It therefore works on iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS.
