Set charge limit for MacBook for longer battery life

Choose a fixed charging limit between 80 and 100%

macOS Tahoe 26.4 brings a long-awaited feature to your MacBook: charging limit. Just like on the iPhone and iPad, you can now set a fixed charging limit on your Mac between 80% and 100% to optimize the life of your MacBook battery.

This feature is independent of the existing ‘Optimized Charging’, which is tailored to your charging routine. By entering a fixed charging limit, you can ensure that your Mac stops charging at a certain percentage, such as 85%.

From now on, you have the option to limit the MacBook battery charging to a specific percentage. This way, the Mac will stop charging once the desired percentage is reached, for example at 85%. This feature was already available on select iPhone and iPad models and is now also being introduced for macOS 26.4 MacBooks with Apple Silicon (M series).

MacBook users who regularly charge their Mac or use it connected to the power grid will be particularly happy with this. By not always charging the battery to 100%, you prevent wear and tear and maintain optimal battery health in the long term. Apple integrates this feature seamlessly into System Settings and even extends it to the Shortcuts app for smart automations.

You can also set or adjust the charging limit via the Shortcuts app, which is ideal for automation. This allows you to limit charging in specific situations.

When creating or editing, use the command ‘Set battery charging limit‘; This allows you to immediately indicate which percentage should be set for the battery. This way you can ensure that the correct charging limit is used in different situations.

For example, you can ensure that when you are at the office, the charging limit is fixed at 85%, but when you are traveling, the charging limit is reached at 100%. This gives you as a user more freedom.
