With Sezame you log in to websites with Touch ID, or Face ID on the iPhone X. Passwords are therefore unnecessary. Not only does this save time, but it is also safer, according to the company.
Sezame: log in without a password
Some time ago it was announced that Apple is developing a Face ID web standard, which allows you to log in to websites with a face scan. For the time being this is still something of the future, so you are dependent on third party apps, such as Sezame. The company is thus too quick for Apple.
The program works on macOS 10.11 to 10.13. You can indicate what you want to use Sezame for: from logging into websites, unlocking your computer to approving payments. In principle, the app is free. However, if you want to be optimally protected, you must purchase the SAFE package. This costs 9.99 euros per year and ensures that you can also secure external data carriers, such as a USB stick, by means of biometrics. The same goes for cloud storage.
This is how Sezame works:
- First, download the Sezame app in the App Store for your iPhone and enter a (recovery) password. You need this when you change phones;
- Then go to the official website to download the program for your Mac. Set a recovery password again;
- Connect your smartphone and computer by following the instructions on the screen. In the menu on your iPhone, press ‘Add a service’ and scan the qr code on your Mac;
- The two are connected and you can now log into websites on your Mac without inserting passwords. You can also unlock your computer with biometric security.
Towards a future without passwords
The company behind Sezame wants to ensure that passwords are redundant in the future. Biometric data, such as your fingerprint, is much more secure, according to the company. In practice, the scanner works quite well, although it is sometimes annoying to have to grab your smartphone.
The disadvantage of the app is that you always need an internet connection. That is why setting a recovery password is so important, because otherwise you will not be able to unlock your Mac in case of internet problems, for example. Moreover, it is not entirely clear how the technique works exactly.
In addition, the importance of privacy naturally plays a major role. After all, you give a lot of personal data to a relatively unknown company, and not everyone likes that. You can therefore also choose to use the iCloud keychain or a password manager.
