In various social media applications you have the option to start a live stream. Consider the live function of Instagram, Facebook or Discord. In addition to the camera, you can also share a live screen recording from your iPhone or iPad.
Your followers will then see the screen of your iPhone or iPad and that can be useful if you want to explain or clarify something that is happening on your screen. This live streaming is part of the screen recording feature of iOS and iPadOS. We explain how it works.
Add screen recording function
Before you can get started with live streaming, you must first add the screen recording function to the control panel, so you can start a recording anytime and anywhere. To do this, go to Settings ▸ Control Center ▸ Adjust Controls ▸ enable the ‘screen recording’ option and give it a desired position.
Live stream screen recording via iPhone or iPad
- Open the control panel
- Place your finger on the record button (circled circle)
- Choose a desired app from the list
- Turn the microphone on or off
- Tap ‘Start Broadcast’ to start the live stream

Immediately, iOS or iPadOS will start the countdown and then start the live broadcast. If you want to stop a live stream, you can tap the red bar at the top, open Dynamic Island or the control panel and tap the record button.
To start the broadcast you must be logged in to the relevant application. A live stream will automatically start and your followers will be able to watch it.
In addition to social media apps, other applications also use this functionality. For example, you can share the screen of your iPhone or iPad in this way via Chromecast and/or AirPlay apps.
