Share Instagram photos directly from your Camera Roll in 3 steps

Thanks to an update to Instagram, it is now possible to upload photos directly from your Camera Roll to your Instagram. We show how this works.

Share Instagram photos from your Camera Roll

The update allows you to upload photos and videos to Instagram without opening the app. To do this, it is important that you have the most recent version of Instagram installed on your iPhone, which is version 8.2 at the time of writing.

You also need to add the Instagram extension to your list. You do this by selecting a photo in your Camera Roll and tapping the share icon (the square with the arrow in it). Then scroll all the way to the right in the list of apps until you get to the ‘More’ button. Tap on this and turn the switch behind Instagram to green to add the app to your list.

Uploading Instagram photos is very easy and uses the standard iOS share menu. In the steps below we show how this works.

Share Instagram photos from other apps

  1. Open the Photos app on your iPhone;
  2. Choose a photo you want to upload and tap the share icon (the square with the arrow in it);
  3. In a new screen you can fill in the description and tags and post the photo directly to your timeline.

The great thing about this feature is that you can just post description to your Instagram photo or video from this screen. If you also want to edit the image or provide it with a stylish filter, you will still have to open Instagram to perform these tasks. Since Instagram has been added to the iOS share menu in this way, you can also use the above technique in all kinds of other apps. Handy for users who prefer to keep all their photos in Google Photos, for example.
