Siri gets a major upgrade in iOS 27: from voice assistant to AI chatbot

Apple is working on a significant update to Siri in iOS 27, developing the voice assistant into a full-fledged AI chatbot, similar to ChatGPT. There are rumors that these changes will be revealed at WWDC 2026, as part of the annual software updates for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

The updated Siri promises to be a lot smarter and more user-friendly, with its own application and deeper integration into the operating system. This means you can not only give voice commands, but also chat and automate complex tasks – perfect for everyday use on your iPhone.

Siri with Apple Intelligence delayed

Apple’s plans to upgrade Siri with Apple Intelligence are no secret, but the AI features announced in the summer of 2025 have since been delayed. After WWDC25, Craig Federighi and Greg Joswiak acknowledged multiple interviews the problems Apple is facing with Siri. The long-awaited features of Apple Intelligence for Siri, such as personalized results, insight into the content of the screen and extensive in-app actions, are taking longer to arrive than originally promised.

Apple is now targeting a release later in 2026, likely as part of iOS 27 or later. According to the tech giant, there were persistent quality issues in testing the new Siri features, causing them to delay the release to avoid disappointing users. They’ve now moved to a more powerful underlying architecture to fix these issues, and Siri will be getting even more updates with iOS 27.

Siri gets its own app

Starting with software update 27, Apple will introduce a standalone Siri app, similar to ChatGPT or Google Gemini. In this app you can type questions or commands and view past conversations – a feature that is currently missing. SiriGPT, as it is called internally, supports multiple chained commands and integrates with ChatGPT for smart replies.

The app for iPhone, iPad and Mac works with extensions, so you can also connect other chatbots such as Google Gemini or Claude. This makes Siri more flexible and less dependent on Apple’s own AI.

Insight into what is on your screen

Siri 2.0 ‘sees’ what’s on your screen and carries out actions without any intermediate steps. Siri can ultimately understand what’s on your iPhone or iPad screen. This allows you, for example, to ask questions about information you are currently seeing, or to perform actions based on the content shown.

Once you give permission to ‘understand what’s on the screen’, Siri becomes much more powerful. Are you looking at a photo? Then you can, for example, ask Siri to edit and share it. Apps like Mail let you search for emails using natural language, without having to manually scroll through them.

Collaboration with Google Gemini

Previously, Apple and Google announced to enter into a long-term partnership to develop the next generation of Apple’s Foundation Models. These new models will leverage Google’s powerful Gemini technology and cloud infrastructure. This represents a significant expansion of Apple’s commitment to artificial intelligence and will, among other things, contribute to a smarter, more personalized version of Siri.

According to Apple, this collaboration is the result of a careful analysis of the current AI market. The company has concluded that Google’s Gemini provides the most advanced and flexible foundation for Apple’s future AI ambitions. Apple emphasizes that despite this partnership, Apple Intelligence will continue to function on local devices and via Private Cloud Compute, maintaining its established focus on privacy and data security.

In-app actions

Siri gets deeper integration with apps, allowing you to perform complex tasks without manually operating the app. Think of editing a photo, booking an appointment, or performing actions within apps based on the context.

Siri personal results

The new AI assistant will soon be able to use personal information, such as emails, calendars and messages, to provide contextual answers. For example, if you ask “When does my mother’s flight land?”, Siri will search your messages for flight information and then check the current status online.

Ask Siri button in apps

Apple may also add a so-called ‘Ask Siri’ button to standard apps such as Mail and Photos in iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. This allows you to directly call Siri for app-specific tasks, such as analyzing a document or photo, just like with advanced AI tools. This button simplifies workflows and speeds up access to information.

You can compare the button with the Visual Intelligence button in screenshots or the live view. This way you can activate Apple Intelligence functions more quickly, something that is currently hidden in some cases.

Chat history with sync

For the first time, it is possible to save conversations with Siri, so you can review previous interactions. This is particularly useful if you want to view previous replies or continue a conversation later. Siri is also expected to be more consistent across Apple devices. Conversations and context can be synced between your iPhone, iPad, and Mac, allowing you to start on one device and continue on another without losing progress.

Availability of Siri 2.0

The announcement Software updates 27, including the new version of Siri and the separate chat app, are expected during WWDC26, which will take place from June 8 to 12 this year. As usual, the developer beta will be available immediately after the presentation, followed by a public beta a few weeks later.

The stable version will probably be in September launched simultaneously with the new iPhone series. Apple may not roll out all Siri features at the same time; larger AI upgrades can be phased in via later updates, similar to recent features.
