Sky: Children of the Light review
The PlayStation 3 game Journey from 2012 was one of the highlights for that game console. Now maker thatgamecompany has taken the basics of Journey and expanded it into a multiplayer experience for smartphones.
Sky: Children of the Light is all about discovery. You glide over sandy plains and fly over clouds in search of new areas. Your goal is to help stray stars return to their original spot in the sky.
You will not undertake this journey alone, because you will meet all kinds of other players to make friends with. You’ll need each other for some puzzles and can even travel the world hand in hand with up to eight players at once. One player is then the leader.
The light in the world
You have different things to do in the locations you visit. For example, you can light candles to help other players, and find ghosts to upgrade your flying skills or earn points. You can spend those points on new emotes or changes to your appearance.
You get seven locations to go to. The first time you probably fly and glide through these worlds with your mouth open. Beautiful images are combined with a beautiful soundtrack. It’s like being presented with a succession of highlights from the game Journey.
If you go back later, you will soon discover that there is more to see and do in these places. There are secrets to discover, pieces of story to be found and most importantly, more things to collect. Together with other players and with your improved flying power you get further and further. The makers also promise to expand the game further, so that you can experience more adventures.
Accessible
Sky keeps the game simple. You control your character on the left side of the screen via a virtual stick. You control the camera with your right finger. Actions are also clearly shown with icons. This control is fine for the most part, but sometimes you can get confused.
For example, if you are flying in a cloud column and you are going the wrong way. The game also has some bugs, but the makers are busy fixing them with updates.
While Sky is very accessible, it’s not a game for everyone. Unlike most games in the App Store, you don’t get instant gratification. With Sky you have to explore and meet other people to get that pleasant feeling. If you are open to that, you will receive a very nice trip in return.
