A new position in Watchos 26 is the sleep score. This gives you a clear insight into the quality of your sleep and helps improve your night’s sleep.
Factors that influence your sleep
There are various factors to influence the quality of your sleep. This includes the duration of your sleep, whether you go to bed at a fixed time, how often you wake up at night, and the duration of every sleep phase. The Apple Watch registers all these factors from Watchos 26 and combines them into a sleep score. This way you can easily see how well you sleep.

In the sleep app on the Apple Watch and the Health app for iPhone you can view your sleep score every morning. This helps you to improve your sleep. Via a complication on your watch or the smart pile you have quick access to your score. Do you want a detailed overview? Then you can also keep track of your scores over a longer period in the health app on your iPhone.
Scientific sleep score
The scores and algorithms used are based on the latest guidelines of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the National Sleep Foundation and the World Sleep Society. Sleep data from more than 5 million nights of the Apple Heart and Movement Study.
How the sleep score works
The score is calculated based on various data that the Apple Watch collects during the night.
- Sleeping time: How long you have slept.
- Consistency of your bedtime: How regularly you go to bed.
- Sleeping interruptions: How often and how long you have been awake.
- Sleeping stages: How long you have spent in light sleep, brake sleep and deep sleep.
- Movement data: How mobile you have been during your sleep
- Heartbeat and polis temperature (for supported models)

The score is displayed in categories such as excellent, high, OK, low and very low, which helps to quickly gain insight into sleep quality without having to interpret complex data.

- Open the sleep app on your Apple Watch
- View the first page in the app
- Open the Health app on your iPhone
- Tap the search field (magnifying glass)
- Go to ‘Sleep’
- Tap ‘Sleep score’

Availability of sleep score
The sleep score function is available on all Apple Watch Ultra models, the Apple Watch SE 2nd generation or newer and the Apple Watch Series 6 or newer. To be able to use it, your Apple Watch must be provided with Watchos 26 or newer and support your iPhone iOS 26.
