Smarthome initiative Matter is working on universal casting

Here at Androidworld, we’re mostly Android fans, but maybe you live in someone’s house who swears by everything Apple. Good news, because the new smarthome initiative Matter, which should go live in 2022, will come with universal solutions for different ecosystems. It has now been announced that it is working on a standard for casting to TVs.

Matter

Matter started in 2017 as an organization that aims to make smarthomes more manageable. Now you can have the smart lamps from IKEA, but a camera from Arlo and Amazon Alexa as an assistant, but they don’t always want to communicate with each other equally well. Matter is there to ensure that the different ecosystems that exist within your home can work together better.

The new focus in this is television, because in an ideal world you would of course want to be able to cast your streaming services to your smart television from any smartphone or tablet. Matter wants that too and that’s why it comes with an app that you can then install on your TV and on your phone, allowing the two to communicate. If your television provider does not support it, there is a browser solution.

Chromecast

With Matter you will soon be able to control all kinds of standard television options, such as the volume up and down or switching the television on and off. The Verge writes that you should be able to do that with your phone or tablet. Of course the casting is the most interesting, because now on some smart TVs it is not possible to cast with an Android smartphone, if you do not own Chromecast. Matter could be a solution for this.

The companies that work together for Matter are not the least: Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung and IKEA, for example. There are also companies that do not participate: it is not mandatory. If they do participate, they must participate fully. Google is one of them: it fully participates, but it will of course always recommend its Chromecast.
