With Snapchat’s ‘Crowd Surf’, the app uses artificial intelligence to stitch together videos shot at the same time during a concert.
Snapchat Crowd Surf
Thanks to Crowd Surf, a longer video should ultimately be created with short films of users from different positions. The function always takes ten seconds of sound from one video and overlays images from multiple users. This creates a dynamic concert video.
Snap, Snapchat’s parent company, tried Crowd Surf at a Lorde concert at the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco. During the song Green Light Snapchat looked at who was filming and combined the clips. The website TechCrunch made a video of the end result.
Making stories together
Crowd Surf will be listed in the Stories section, under Friends Snap Stories. If a phone icon appears at the bottom right of the screen while watching, you can tap the screen to watch the performance from a different angle. Since many people record videos via Snapchat at concerts, that idea is quite viable.
However, it is unknown when the Crowd Surf feature will be rolled out worldwide. For the time being, it seems to be only intended for during events such as concerts and speeches. The function may be limited to large gatherings, where many people are filming at the same time, and Snapchat will base that on whether to enable Crowd Surf. In that case, sports competitions and public events such as the Canal Pride are also eligible.
More followers
Making a video is therefore more interesting for Snapchat users, as it may get them more viewers and followers. On Snapchat, collecting new followers is not that simple, because the other must have a username or qr code. With a function such as Crowd Surf, the platform can open up more for this.
It’s a lot easier on Instagram, Snapchat’s main competitor. This photo and video service from Facebook does not yet have a similar function for concerts, but it is known that Instagram likes to be inspired by Snapchat.
