Sony predicts that smartphone cameras will deliver better photos than a DSLR camera within three years. That’s thanks to larger sensors used in phones and innovations in image processing. Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasing role in photography.
Smartphone camera and DSLR
One of the aspects of the smartphone that has seen the most innovation for years has been the camera. Every year, smartphone manufacturers take big steps forward and manage to get more quality from relatively small camera sensors. Sony now proposes in a presentation Nikkei Japan discovered that within three years you can take better pictures with a phone than with a DSLR camera.
Sony also substantiates that prediction and states that we can count on better image processing thanks to AI and the extra possibilities that larger image sensors bring. Larger sensors also contain larger pixels, which means that camera lens makers can greatly improve the HDR, or dynamic range of photos, among other things.
DSLR disappears
For the average user, the smartphone camera is already a replacement for a separate camera such as an SLR (DSLR) or system camera. Camera manufacturers are also increasingly accompanying DSLR technology to the exit, opting instead for system camera technology. The difference is that these come without a mirror system and only have an electronic viewfinder.
Sony is the world’s leading maker of camera sensors for smartphones. The brand has, according to figures from Statistics 42 percent of the market. This is despite the fact that Sony still appeals to a small group of consumers with the sale of its own phones.
Video Progress
Despite these predictions in the field of photography, a system camera or DSLR remains the better choice when it comes to video. And yet Sony expects smartphone cameras to make even stronger strides in movie performance in the coming years compared to the improvement in photography. Filming in 8K, multi-frame processing and AI should ensure that evolution, according to the Japanese company.
Do you still have an SLR camera or DSLR at home? Do you still use it as much as before, or do you leave it at home more and more? Maybe you only use your phone’s camera? Let us know in the comments.
