Spotify under heavy fire from artists: what’s going on?

Spotify has received serious criticism from artists such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. They have both removed their music from the platform because they believe Spotify is spreading disinformation about the corona virus. Neil Young calls on Spotify employees to look for another job.

Disinformation on Spotify?

For weeks now, the music app Spotify has been criticized by artists and it is mainly the well-known singer-songwriter Neil Young who comes to the fore. They accuse Spotify of allowing podcasts that spread incorrect information about the corona vaccines, they know that The Verge

It’s all about the popular and exclusive Spotify podcast ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’. Spotify paid 87.7 million euros two years ago to attract comedian and presenter Joe Rogan and thus make its app more attractive to podcast lovers. Rogan told an episode of his podcast last year that healthy 21-year-olds don’t need a vaccine at all.

The ultimatum

Those statements went wrong with artists Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. They presented Spotify with an ultimatum: either it would remove Joe Rogan’s content, or they would remove their music. Spotify did not comply with their request and so Young and Mitchell’s music also disappeared from the popular music app.

Spotify says it has a clear policy on content that spreads misleading and incorrect information about COVID-19. In return for The Wall Street Journal the music service said it has now taken 20,000 podcasts offline for violating those policies. Previously, the app also added information labels to its podcasts about COVID-19. Many episodes of Rogan’s podcast have since been removed from Spotify, but the company did not respond to the musicians’ demands to remove all content from the comedian.

‘Numbers over creativity’

Meanwhile, Young, in particular, continues to oppose Spotify’s position. He blames the music service now in an open letter that the focus is on numbers and according to him Spotify and its CEO Daniel Ek stand for a wrong corporate culture. His message to Spotify employees is therefore clear: “Get out before it eats your soul. The goals that Ek pursues are only about numbers and not about art or creativity.”

Spotify already responded to Young’s actions last week. “We want to make all of the world’s music and audio content available to Spotify users. This involves a great responsibility of balancing security for listeners and freedom for content creators,” the music service said in a response to The Wall Street Journal. We regret Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify, but we hope to welcome him back soon.”
