St. John’s wort is considered a vegetable mood and is available in the form of capsules without a prescription in pharmacies and drugstores. However, caution, however, is advisable in the sunny months: Anyone who takes in St. John’s wort should pay attention to good skin protection.

Many people use slight moods or seasonal mood swings. The ingredients hypericin and hyperforin influence the messenger substances in the brain and can thus positively influence the mood.

Important: St. John’s wort is only suitable for light to moderate depressive moods. With severe depression, the effect is not sufficient – medical treatment is absolutely necessary here!

St. John’s wort makes skin more sensitive to light

“Anyone who takes John’s wort to the mood of the mood must be careful when they go into the sun because there can be photo damage to the skin. You will quickly get a sunburn or red stains,” explains Dr. Gernot Langs, medical director of the Schön Klinik Bad Bramstedt.

The reason: St. John’s wort increases the light sensitivity of the skin. In combination with sunlight, so -called phototoxic reactions with itching, pain or burning can occur. “Therefore, you should always wear high sun protection,” advises Langs.

St. John’s wort as a natural mood upheller

St. John’s wort works mainly through ingredients such as hypericin – this is the phototoxic fabric – and hyperforin and affects neurotransmitters in the brain such as serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline that regulate the mood and emotions. It is therefore considered a natural antidepressant and should also help with anxiety and sleep disorders. Since St. John’s wort can have interactions with other medication, you should discuss an application with a doctor beforehand.
