The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max have a number of professional video features. For example, both devices can record 4K ProRes videos. On the iPhone 16 pro you also have the option to make slow motion videos in 4K Dolby Vision.
If you are going to use ProRes, keep in mind that filming in this mode generates extremely large video files. The iPhone 16 Pro stores approximately 440 MB per second when filming in 4K at 120 fps. Fortunately, you can use external storage to store your recordings, provided you also use the correct USB-C cable.
A standard USB-C cable has a maximum data transfer capacity of 5 Gbps, which is insufficient if you want to record or store ProRes recordings externally.

Recording in 4K at 120 fps on external storage is no problem for this cable.
You can see that you are dealing with a premium data cable on the connectors. These are made from a reinforced hybrid metal alloy. This makes the risk of a cable break at the connectors almost impossible. The cable’s rugged, double-braided nylon exterior provides strength, durability and protection against abrasion.

Tips for recording ProRes videos to external storage
On iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro, you can connect an external storage device via USB-C to save or record your ProRes footage directly to the external storage device. If you want to use this, please take the points below into account.
- The external storage device must be formatted with exFAT.
- Use a USB 3 cable with a speed of at least 10 Gbits per second. SRGE 3.2 USB-C 20Gbps 240W cable from UAG is extremely suitable and can also be used to charge all kinds of USB-C devices up to a maximum of 240 W.
- The write speed of the external storage device must be at least 220 MB per second for 4K60 ProRes and at least 440 MB per second for 4K120 ProRes. If you connect a slower external storage device, you will see a ‘Low recording speed’ message.
- You can use the Files app to format the external storage device and manage your ProRes files. For optimal performance, it is wise to reformat the external storage device before each 4K120 ProRes recording session.
