Stream an iPad to TV: this is how you watch movies on the big screen

Are you watching a YouTube video on your iPad, but do you actually want to see it on the big screen of your TV? Which can. There are three ways to stream your iPad to a TV, and in this article we’ll explain each option.

Stream iPad to TV: These are your options

An iPad display is larger than the image of an iPhone, but does not come close to the large screen in the living room. Sometimes it is better to stream your iPad to your TV, for example when you want to show your holiday photos to family and friends. You have three options for this.

Stream an iPad to TV: this is how you watch movies on the big screen

1. AirPlay 2

The easiest way to stream from your iPad to your TV is via AirPlay 2. Apple’s streaming technology can handle more and more smart TVs, such as those from LG, Samsung and Sony. Of course, AirPlay 2 is also available on Apple’s own media player, the Apple TV.

The only condition for streaming is that both your iPad and Apple TV / TV with AirPlay 2 are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Streaming is then child’s play:

  1. Find the video you want to stream;
  2. Tap the AirPlay icon, recognizable by the triangle with the screen behind it;
  3. Tap your (Apple) TV.

It differs per app how you get to the AirPlay icon. For example, in some applications you first have to dive into the settings menu. You will always come across the icon quickly in Apple’s own apps.

2. Chromecast

Have you connected a Chromecast to your TV? Even then you can stream to the big screen via your iPad. After installing the Chromecast, which only takes a few minutes, you will automatically see a new icon in suitable apps.

Tap this Cast sign (usually found in the top right corner of the iPad screen) to start streaming to your TV. Not all apps have Chromecast support, but this of course applies to popular services such as Netflix, Videoland, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube.

3. Connect with cables

Don’t have an Apple TV or Chromecast at home? Then you can always get started with cables to connect your iPad to the television screen. Depending on the TV model, you need an HDMI adapter or VGA coupling block for this.

We prefer the first option, because with VGA you have no sound. Because the iPad itself, regardless of the model, does not have an HDMI connection, you need an adapter. You can purchase this coupling block from Apple itself, but almost every electronics store has them.

You connect this connector to the Lightning input of your iPad. Do you have an iPad Pro from 2018 or a newer model? Then you have to purchase an adapter with USB-C cable, because the newer iPad Pros no longer have a Lightning input. Then you plug one end of the HDMI cable (which you have to buy separately) in your TV, and the other end in the HDMI connection block.

What to pay attention to

Then you probably have to select the correct HDMI channel on your TV. With some televisions, it automatically switches to the correct channel, so you can immediately start streaming from your iPad.

With this solution, make sure that your iPad uses a lot of energy while streaming. Many HDMI adapters therefore also have an extra opening to which you can connect the charger. This charges your iPad while streaming.
