Students test flexible travel app as successor to public transport chip card

As of today, 300 students will test a new travel product for three months. Instead of checking in with the OV chip card, they use a flexible travel app.

One app for all modes of transport

The app is called flexible travel app because the students can travel with different means of transport. They can opt for the train, tram, bus and metro, but also shared means of transport such as shared scooters, shared cars and shared bicycles. The test is an initiative of start-up Flytz and mobility app Moves, in collaboration with the Municipality of Rotterdam and Zuid-Holland Ookbaar.

“Students have been traveling with the same student travel product for 30 years; a weekend or weekly subscription, with which you can travel by bus, tram, metro and train. Time for change”, as Renske Wytzes, Daan Peeters and Joost Wilmink, (former) students and founders of start-up Flytz indicate in a press release† According to them, the offer of mobility in cities is changing and so are the travel preferences of students. Shared bicycles and shared scooters are extremely popular and the Swapfiets is also frequently used.

According to the report, the solution is a Mobility-as-a-Service concept for students. In other words: one central app with which the student can plan, book, pay and use any form of sustainable transport, both public transport and shared transport, based on a personal budget. The 300 students will be able to test the app extensively over the next three months. The pilot proved to be extremely popular among students. More than 4,000 interested parties have registered for the 300 available places.
