The birth of new stars is a majestic sight. Among the most intriguing images are images of star-forming regions. Huge masses of gas and dust radiate here in all wavelength ranges - from the far infrared to visible light to the extreme ultraviolet.

Dense molecular clouds often obscure part of the image or block certain wavelengths. Perhaps in millions of years they will be the starting material for other stars and planets. Such images of the birthplaces of new star and planetary systems are mostly made by different…
