Thanks to Do Not Disturb you know when strangers are on your MacBook

Do Not Disturb is an app that warns you when your MacBook is opened. This makes it more difficult for malicious parties to get hold of your data.

The aim of the program is to combat so-called ‘evil maid’ attacks. This name comes from the situation where, for example, a hotel employee tries to activate your MacBook while it is unattended in your room.

Do Not Disturb continuously checks that the lid of your MacBook is not being opened. As soon as this happens, you will be notified by email. If you decide to download the (paid) iOS app, you will immediately receive a push notification.

In addition, you can choose to display a warning on the MacBook screen and thus deter the intruder, run a certain script, or keep a log. This log records whether the stranger starts up programs, for example, or connects new USB devices. You can also turn on the camera so that you can see the culprit on screen.

The app belongs to Patrick Wardle, a former NSA employee. He got the idea when he had a date while his laptop was still in the hotel room. Afterwards, he felt that the cleaning lady had been working on his MacBook Pro, but could not prove it. At the time, he was still employed by the American intelligence service and therefore his data should absolutely not fall into the wrong hands.

The program is open-source and therefore free. The iOS app costs (depending on the exchange rate) about 0.80 euros per month, or 8.20 euros per year. With the app you can, for example, receive photos directly from the MacBook on your iPhone or iPad and pass on follow-up actions.
