The week is over and that means that a fresh app overview is waiting for you! As far as we are concerned, you should not miss these new apps, games and updates. You can find the best iOS apps from week 38 here.
The best iOS apps at a glance
The App Store works overtime every week to handle the never-ending stream of new apps and updates. However, you will hardly notice this, because only a small part is worth installing. If your iPhone or iPad can use some new apps, you’ve come to the right place.
1. Google Maps
From now on, Google Maps can also be used with Apple CarPlay. A major improvement from iOS 12 to CarPlay is the support of third-party navigation apps. Google is the first to respond to this with a suitable Maps version for CarPlay.
To use Google Maps in the car, you need the latest update of the iOS app. This is now in the App Store. When you synchronize the navigation app with the display in your car after updating, you can get started.
The design of the map service has been specially optimized for a car screen, with larger letters and icons. The biggest difference with Apple’s Maps app is that Google uses its own map data. Siri doesn’t support Google Maps yet, but it does have built-in voice recognition. You activate this by tapping the screen.
2. Nception
Nception is not just any camera app, but one that turns your world upside down. Literally, because the app is intended to make photos and videos surreal. The makers of Nception were quite inspired by the surreal images from the movie Inception.
With more than twenty different filters you create an upside down world, buildings that overlap or other optical illusions. The filters can also be used in real time, after which you can adjust them afterwards. There is also a slow motion function.
3. Assignments
When you installed the iOS 12 update, you may have noticed that there is a new app on your iPhone: Assignments. Apple’s new default app comes with the new Siri Shortcuts feature. With this, Apple gives you the reins to better tailor the assistant to you.
By bundling multiple commands under one shortcut, you can make Siri do a series of things with a voice command. For example, when you say, “Hey Siri, good morning,” the voice assistant will open your favorite news app, launch a playlist on Apple Music, and tell you the travel time to work. Not only Apple itself, but also third-party developers can develop Siri Shortcuts.
4. Halide Camera
In a new update, the nice camera app Halide Camera has also received support for Siri Shortcuts. For example, ask Siri to take a photo when your iPhone is at a distance. Thanks to the update, the app has also become a lot faster and you can gain insight into the technical specifications of your iPhone camera.
In addition, several new functions have been added to take even better photos. Inspired by the Smart HDR technology that can be found on the iPhone XS, Halide has improved its Portrait Effects Matte function. The app now has its own blur effect, with which you can create the same kind of bokeh effect.
