The best bike route app is different for everyone. Whether you just want to get out of the house for a while or go on a cycling holiday: our country has plenty of beautiful tours. These are the 5 best bike route apps for all distances and types of cyclists.
The best bike route app for iPhone
The Netherlands has more bicycles than inhabitants and our country is therefore made for the steel steed. We use the two-wheeler not only to get to and from school or work, but also in our free time. With these cycling route apps for iPhone you will find the most beautiful places in the country.
1. Route.nl: The best choice for most people
Route.nl is a free cycling route app with more than 50,000 tours in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. The routes vary from short (10 kilometers), day trips of around 80 kilometers to real cycling holidays of up to 800 kilometers. The tours are based on the node network, so you can be sure that the tour is safe.
Furthermore, the app is simple in design. Simply indicate how long you want to cycle and where, and the app immediately gives you hundreds of suggestions for fun trips.
As soon as you have selected a route, you will immediately see a text with information about the area including places of interest. For 9.99 euros you will no longer see advertisements and you will be guided through the audio navigation while cycling.
2. Cycling network: Thematic routes
You can also go to Fietsnetwerk for handmade, thematic cycling routes. For example, one tour leads you along the most beautiful flower fields, while the next route revolves around beautiful castles. The app therefore excels in completeness and an eye for detail.
For example, Fietsnetwerk not only shows you the most beautiful tours, but the app also tells you a lot about the area, such as history, sights and nice eateries. As icing on the cake, the app also navigates you to these locations, and back again. A downside is that the routes cannot be saved offline.
3. LF routes: For the trained cyclist
Are you planning to go out for a whole weekend or maybe even longer? Then LF routes is worth a try. This app only offers long-distance routes, or LF routes. The cycling route app stands out thanks to its navigation screen, which is very simple and clear. You know exactly how to cycle to get to your destination.
It is also handy that you can download the routes in advance, so that you are not dependent on an internet connection. Furthermore, LF routes is very complete and you can immediately see, for example, the best accommodation options for your trip in the app.
The app is made for and by cyclists, although the range of routes is still a bit sparse. Hopefully this will change in the future, because there is nothing wrong with the app.
4. ANWB Cycling: For ANWB members
Quality over quantity. That is what ANWB Cycling stands for in a nutshell. The app certainly does not offer most cycling routes, but very good ones. The tours are selected manually and accurately, unlike a lot of other applications that put together a route based on nodes.
In addition, ANWB Cycling offers additional benefits for ANWB members. They can use so-called ‘Hospitable Plus’ points, where tire repair kits, bicycle pumps and charging points for electric bicycles are available. A disadvantage of the cycle route app is that a navigation function is missing, so you have to find your route yourself via the map.
5. Maps 3D: Cycling abroad
Are you a real adventurer and is the Dutch landscape too flat for you? Then you have to be at Maps 3D. This paid cycling route app, as the name suggests, shows the landscape in three dimensions. This comes in handy for mountain climbs and descents, where the difference in height is important. The app offers thousands of routes in more than 75 countries, including neighboring Belgium and Germany.
It is extra nice that you can save routes in advance for offline use. This way you are not dependent on the quality of your internet connection.
Furthermore, 3D Maps uses a GPS signal to keep track of your trips. A nice addition is that the cycling route app offers Apple Watch support, so that you can see on your watch how much you are going to climb or descend.
