The best iOS apps from week 11 at a glance
The App Store works overtime every week to handle the never-ending stream of new apps and updates. You don’t notice that much, however, because only a fraction of it is worth installing. If your iPhone can use some new apps, you’ve come to the right place.
The adventure game Oxenfree is now available in the App Store. A group of friends travels to a strange island. This is where an eerie and, above all, unique adventure arises that you must have experienced. Oxenfree is a 2d game that mainly revolves around the story. You will have to solve small puzzles, but you will largely be busy walking around the island and having conversations. Nice is that the main character always carries a radio, with which she can do some special things in the world.
The HilversumTV app bundles ‘the best’ of the public broadcaster of the past 65 years. From Van Kooten & De Bie to Theo & Thea and even old news broadcasts can be viewed. The broadcasts are presented via the HilversumTV app. You watch the videos via a YouTube player. At least if they are still on YouTube, because we also came across some videos that were no longer available. You can share the broadcasts directly via social media with a handy button, and it is also possible for users to leave a comment.
WhatsApp is taking the transformation to Snapchat a step back. After a mountain of complaints, the most popular chat app in the world is bringing back the old WhatsApp text status. This will return the text bar below your username, in which you can indicate your status in a few words. ‘In a meeting’ for example. You adjust this status via the settings of the app and you come across it when you open the contacts page. Even if you want to start a new chat, you will immediately see the status of the person you want to start the conversation with.
For many iPhone users it will be a habit: you take a photo and then choose a matching filter to make your snapshot that little bit more beautiful. Designer Louie Mantia shows with Pico Digital Film how this worked for the smartphone in the past. Then you could give photos a filter by changing the film roll. This makes colors look different, which for example creates a warm or cool effect. A big difference from how it works now, because in this way you already choose the filter before you take the photo.
In Bean’s Quest, the free App of the Week, you take on the role of a cheerful green bean with a sombrero on his head. It automatically bounces across your screen, so all you have to do is tap the left or right arrow. This makes the game a bit reminiscent of Super Mario Run, where in Bean’s Quest you automatically jump instead of running. The game hides 150 separate challenges spread over 5 worlds. Plenty to do, and with the entertaining background music, this game will not get boring quickly.
