Is there a distinctly Spanish’ race today? Is it correct to suppose that Moorish rule created a ‘mixed’ race? Has Northern Spain remained Christian then ‘purely pure’?
It seems to me that ethnic nationalism in Spain finds its roots here.
Answer
Dear Yuri
In the first place, it is not scientifically feasible to speak of a race, let alone link that term to a nation-state. When cultures come together, as with the Moorish invasion in Spain, there is of course an exchange of culture and genes. Purely geographically, it would therefore make sense that more genetic material, which can be linked to the Middle East or even Asia, can be found in people from the South of Spain. After all, this is also reflected in the culture and the architectural style, etc. I spoke with a colleague anthropologist and she agreed that Spanish nationalism (if it exists at all) stems from various processes such as language pride and sensitivity, social status, economic interests in the present. and past, mixed with regionalism that was to become nationalism. The time of Franco undoubtedly also played a major role here. Finally, the roots of nationalism are often imaginary. This means that history is colored in such a way, often based on political interests, in order to create a shared past. There is a lot of literature if you want to know more about this under the search term ‘imagined communities’.
