These are Google’s new experimental photo and video apps for iOS

Google has released two new apps for iOS. With Scrubbies you can make short repeating videos, with Selfissimo you can take a series of selfies.

Experimental apps from Google

The new apps from Google are part of a new program that the company has created. Google calls it ‘Appsperiments’. It is a series of apps for photography and filming on the smartphone, built with experimental technology. According to the company, this approach is inspired by ‘Motion Stills’, an app that stabilizes videos and Live Photos thanks to software.

Just like Motion Stills, the new apps are also completely self-contained. They highlight a function and offer it in an app. They are therefore not very extensive apps, but they are fun to try. On iOS, these new apps from Google are called Selfissimo and Scrubbies.

Selfissimo

With Selfissimo you install a passport photo booth on your phone, as it were. The app takes a series of selfies in black and white. Tapping the screen will start the photo session. Every time you take a different pose, the app takes a photo. In addition, texts are shown that encourage you, such as ‘Strike a pose!’, ‘Fantastic!’ and ‘You’re magical!’.

Tap the screen again and the photo session ends. The photos you have taken are immediately displayed and you can view, share and delete them one by one.

Scrubbies

Scrubbies is an app that allows you to record videos. Then you can make some kind of remixes. By swiping a finger over the video, the video will play. If you swipe with two fingers, you will light out a part of the film and you can make the images move back and forth. Google compares it to scratching a DJ.

The short remixes contain highlights from videos, for example, which are then played in a repeat. It takes some practice to get the hang of it, but this can produce some funny results, similar to Live Photos.

More app experiments on the way

Selfissimo and Scrubbies are available on iOS. Google has also made another ‘apps experiment’ available on Android, which allows users to place their photos in a comic book format. Google will probably release these kinds of small, experimental apps more often in the future.
