Countless international apps appear every month, but apps and updates are also released continuously in the Netherlands. In this monthly overview we list the best Dutch apps of January.
Wazzurb can best be described as a Facebook for the neighborhood. Only the people in the neighborhood can see messages from other neighborhood residents on the timeline. This way you can easily share messages and photos and get to know your neighbors in that way. Wazzurb also keeps the neighborhood safe with a warning mode. This will let your neighbors know if burglars are active, for example.
ING has received an update with a focus on the app’s virtual assistant. Users running iOS 10 or higher can now ask the ING Banking app to transfer money. This way you can make a transfer or payment request with your voice. The ING app works for this function with Siri and your ING address book. You simply give a command like ‘Hey Siri I want to transfer money’ or ‘Hey Siri I want to receive money’ to perform the action.

Newsstand app Blendle came this month with a new revenue model. For ten euros a month you will receive a selection of articles that interest you every day. This makes the comparison with Spotify somewhat short-sighted, because for this fixed amount per month you can not read all articles from all newspapers and magazines unlimited. Your personal offer is put together via an algorithm, which is unique for everyone.
Newspaper publisher De Persgroep released a new Topics NL app this year. If you have a subscription to one of the thirteen newspapers, you can read them all via this app. Readers can choose topics on which they want to view articles in the app.
Ava is an app that aims to help the hearing impaired in everyday life. The app listens to what someone is saying and converts the words into text on the screen. One of the makers of Ava, which is being developed in San Francisco, is the Dutchman Pieter Doevendans. Partly thanks to him, Ava now works in Dutch, but English and French are also supported. With the app, the deaf and hard of hearing can even follow group conversations via the text on the iPhone.
