This is how the cool VR mode of Apple Maps works (thanks to ARKit)

Apple does not say a word about it, but Apple Maps hides an impressive virtual reality mode. Everyone can use it from iOS 11. We show how it works.

Apple Maps vr function exploits ARKit

Since iOS 11, Apple has added a nice extra to the map service Apple Maps. The well-known FlyOver function has been expanded with the possibilities of ARKit. This allows you to literally zoom in on buildings by moving your iPhone, as if you are hanging as a giant above a digital city.

The only condition set by Apple Maps is that the city in question has a FlyOver. In the Netherlands, these are, for example, Utrecht and Rotterdam. This ensures that satellite images are replaced by three-dimensional buildings, which ARKit then brings to life in a new way.

This is how you use the function:

  1. Open Apple Maps (the Maps app);
  2. Tap on ‘3D’ in the top right corner;
  3. Go to a city with FlyOver, Utrecht for example;
  4. Wait for the map to load and move your iPhone or iPad.

Move and rotate with your iPhone and iPad

From now on you can scroll through the city with your finger, while the position of your iPhone or iPad determines where you are looking. It is one of the ways in which Apple uses the augmented reality platform in its apps. Meanwhile, developers are also busy developing their own ar apps. We have listed the best in the overview below.
