Google Earth now makes it possible to measure countries, football fields and other geographical locations with a new measurement function. This is how this handy measuring function works.
Google Earth measurement function
An update to the Google Earth app for iPhone and iPad makes Google’s mapping service a lot more useful. This feature has been available on Android and Chrome for some time, but is now also making the switch to iOS.
With the measurement function, you can calculate how far your home is from the North Pole, or how great the distance as the crow flies is between your work and your holiday destination at the touch of a screen. It is also a way to quickly plan a walking route.

Before going through the steps below to activate the feature, we recommend that you visit the App Store to make sure you’re running the latest version of Google Earth.
This is how you measure a distance with Google Earth:
- Open Google Earth;
- Tap the three dots in the top right corner;
- Select ‘Measure’;
- Place a point on the map;
- Place a second point, the distance will now be measured;
- Create a shape to see the area of an area.
Google writes in a blog that the feature will probably also come in handy in education, allowing teachers to challenge their students to measure distances between cities.
While this feature will undoubtedly come in handy in Google Earth, more people would likely discover it if Google added it to Google Maps. Measuring a distance in this way without planning a route can be something for many users that Google’s map service does not yet offer. Until then, you can download Google Earth for free from the App Store.
