From iOS 12, a brand new app from Apple will appear on your home screen. The ARKit Measure app makes every tape measure superfluous from now on.

When ARKit came out in 2017, it didn’t take long for developers to come up with tons of tape measure apps. Thanks to augmented reality, you can accurately measure objects in the real world, simply by pointing your iPhone camera at them. Apple seems to find this such a good introduction to its AR platform that such an app is available on every iPhone from iOS 12.

The Measure app is very simple. You open the app, move your iPhone back and forth to scan the room and then you can start measuring. With a push of the plus button you place the starting point, after which you can move the iPhone to draw a digital measuring tape. Press the plus again to place a new point and see the distance.

This is how the Measure app works step by step

  1. Open the Measure app;
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions and move your iPhone;
  3. Tap the plus sign to set a starting point;
  4. Move your iPhone over the object you are going to measure;
  5. Tap the plus sign to save an end point.

This way you can place multiple points in the same measurement so that your iPhone keeps track of all dimensions and total area. When you’re done measuring, press the shutter button to take a photo of your measurement, which will automatically appear in your iPhone camera roll.

Thanks to iOS 12 and ARKit 2.0, the app can not only measure flat areas, but also make walls and other vertical measurements. In addition to measuring objects, you can also use the Measure app as a spirit level. In the bar at the bottom of the screen you can easily switch between the Measure and Level functions.
