This is how you disable the Ultra Broadband U1 chip in iOS 13.3.1

Due to the new iOS 13.3.1 update, it is now possible to disable the U1 chip of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro (Max). You do that as follows.

U1 chip stores location data

Apple added this option because iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro users complained that their location was being continuously tracked. The iPhone forwarded the location data even when their location was turned off. The culprit was the Ultra Broadband U1 chip.

  1. Open the settings;
  2. Scroll down and tap on ‘Privacy’;
  3. Tap ‘Location Services’;
  4. Choose ‘System’ (at the very bottom of the list);
  5. Turn off the slider behind ‘Networks & wireless’ and confirm your choice.

Location chip for improving AirDrop

The U1 chip determines its location in relation to other devices in a room. The iPhone 11 mainly uses this feature to improve the AirDrop feature. However, the location chip is banned in some countries due to privacy. The Cupertino company therefore ensures with the new iOS update that it is possible to disable the chip.

It is good to know that your iPhone no longer continuously stores the location data, but that is why the function can no longer be used to improve bluetooth and wifi. You can always turn the location chip back on by following the steps above.
