macOS 11 (Big Sur) doesn’t just have a dark mode, but a very special one. You can make the dark mode extra dark via a trick in the settings screen. iPhone shows how to do this.
Activate extra dark mode of macOS 11 (Big Sur)
Since macOS Mojave from 2018, the Mac has a dark mode. In 2019 dark mode became ‘smarter’, because since then you can switch it on and off automatically. From macOS 11 (Big Sur) you can make the dark mode even darker than before. This feature will be added to the Big Sur beta soon, and we’ll show you how to activate it:
- Open the Apple menu and choose ‘System Preferences’;
- Tap on ‘General’ and make sure that you have selected ‘Dark’ in view;
- Remove the checkmark from ‘Prevent background image from being displayed in windows’.
You have now turned off Desktop Tinting. This feature makes the wallpaper on your Mac shine through open windows a bit. By turning off Desktop Tinting, the background gets a more even tone, making the dark mode of macOS 11 just a bit darker than its predecessor. You notice this, for example, with open windows and programs.
However, there is also a disadvantage to the extra dark mode of macOS 11. Desktop Tinting ensures that macOS looks ‘smooth’. The wallpaper on your Mac shines through a bit in open windows, so that the system appears as one unified whole.
About macOS Big Sur
nicknamed Big Sur, macOS (11) is the biggest Mac update in years. The software ensures, among other things, that the Apple computer gets a streamlined Dock, some apps (such as Safari) have been completely renewed and the widgets in the notification center have also been given a fresh look.
